HONG KONG: Hong Kong's population exceeded 7 million by the end of 2009, up 0.5 percent over the previous year, according to latest official figures released here.
At the end of 2009, Hong Kong population was 7,026,400, representing an increase of 37,500, according to the statistics released by the Census and Statistics Department of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region government.
Births and the inflow of one-way permit holders were key constituents of the overall population rise.
The population's natural increase was 41,900, resulting from 82,100 babies born to both Hong Kong and non-Hong Kong residents and 40,200 deaths. Last year saw a negative net movement of 4,400 residents.
Among the total population, 6,816,900 were usual residents and 209,500 mobile residents. The population figure does not include visitors. As at the end of 2009, there were 467,900 visitors.
