The closest that I could find as a comparison was with NationMaster for 2010. For murder, the US is ranked 43rd per capita, compared with China in 74th place. I could not find comparable stats for all violent crimes, including rape and assault, against the person but based on the murder stats there would appear to be some justification in expats widely reporting the safety of China compared with the US.
