ISTANBUL - A Turkish court on Thursday sentenced 84 people to life imprisonment over their involvement with a failed coup bid in 2016, local media reported.

Istanbul's 25th Criminal Court handed down its final verdict on a total of 133 suspects over their roles in deadly confrontations at one of Istanbul's major bridges during the night of the failed putsch on July 15, 2016, the state-run Anadolu agency said.

The clashes on the Martyrs' Bridge across the Bosphorus Strait, previously called the Bosphorus Bridge, killed 34 people.

The remaining suspects were convicted to jail in terms of 15-17 years.
