British MPs vote on Theresa May's Brexit plan
Months of wrangling in Britain's Parliament culminated last night in a vote on Prime Minister Theresa May's blueprint for how the United Kingdom should exit the European Union.
And, with even her most ardent supporters expecting a heavy defeat, talk turned to what might happen next, even before the vote was taken.
The Guardian newspaper predicted ahead of the vote that Jeremy Corbyn, leader of the opposition Labour Party, would immediately demand a vote of "no-confidence" following a government defeat, something that could force a general election. The no-confidence vote, if triggered, could be held as soon as Wednesday.
Sky News noted that, if May were to lose a "no confidence" vote, which appears unlikely, her Conservative Party would have the option of forming a new government within 14 days or allowing a general election to be held.
