The Embassy of the People’s Republic of China and China Daily are co-hosting a story sharing event “My China Album”, to celebrate the 40th Anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between China and the United States of America. “My China Album” aims at highlighting the profound friendship between the Chinese and American people, captured through the photographs and accompanying captions. The event is sponsored by China General Chamber of Commerce – USA (CGCC) and China National Tourist Office in New York.

The event takes place from February to May 2019. A launch ceremony was held on February 6. The submissions window opened on February 6 and closed on April 19. Following the close of submissions and judging period, an award ceremony was held on May 4.

Participants of the event can submit up to 3 photos with accompanying captions limited to 500 words or less, explaining the person-to-person exchange or relationship exemplified through the visual aspect of the submission. All submissions will be judged in a first round by a group of journalists and photographers from China Daily, following the close of the submission. Those which pass the first round will go through a second round of judging by an expert panel consisting of renowned scholars, writers, photographers and diplomats from China and the United States.

Ultimately, 10 contestants will be awarded. The grand prize winner will receive two roundtrip economy class tickets between New York and Beijing. This will be followed by two top winners, three runners-up and four second runners-up, who will also receive prizes. All participants will receive a souvenir: a Chinese style bookmark with the logo of the 40th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between the People's Republic of China and the United States of America. Every finalist will be offered 2 VIP PASSES to the Opening Ceremony of Chinese Embassy Open Day on May 4th, 2019.

Q:Will I receive written notice that my submission has been received?

A:Only finalists will receive notifications.

Q:Will finalists be contacted?

A:Yes, the finalists will be contacted following the first panel of judging.

Q:Can anonymous or partially-anonymous (for example “First Name, Last Initial”) submissions be accepted?

A:No, you must include your full name with your entry in order to be eligible for the competition, and in order to facilitate awarding.

Q:Do entrants have to submit three photos, or is it possible to be considered for a written story alone?

A:Entrants must submit at least one photo, maximum of three photos.

Q:Will stories over 500 words be given consideration?

A:Due to the high number of anticipated submissions, we will only be able to read up to 500 words per entry.

Q:How will submissions be judged, and by whom?

A:Submissions will be judged by two separate panels of judges. The first panel will read all entries, and then send top submissions to a second panel comprised of China-U.S. experts and other representatives from the Embassy or China Daily.

Q:What do the photos need to be about, and do I need to have visited China in order for my story to be considered, or can I write about experiences with Chinese culture from a U.S. perspective?

A:The story can take place anywhere in the world, as long as it captures a person-to-person interaction, exemplifying China-U.S. friendship.

Q:Who is eligible?

A:Everyone is eligible to participate in the event.
