Presidential elections are scheduled to be held in Slovakia on March 16, with the runoff on March 30.

Zuzana Caputova, a lawyer and activist who has suddenly emerged as the front-runner in a presidential election in Slovakia, opened a seemingly insurmountable lead over the ruling party's candidate in the final opinion poll two weeks before the vote.

She was given the nickname "Slovakia's Erin Brockovich" by fellow lawyers for leading a grueling fight against an illegal landfill in her hometown, with echoes of the plot of a film that won Julia Roberts an Oscar.

Incumbent President Andrej Kiska is not running for a second term. He was elected president in March 2014.
