5th phase of India's elections underway

NEW DELHI - Polling of votes is underway in 51 parliamentary constituencies across seven states for the fifth phase of India's 17th general elections on Monday.

As many as 674 candidates are in the fray for Monday's phase of polling, including a few senior politicians like Indian National Congress (INC) President Rahul Gandhi, her mother and former INC Chief Sonia Gandhi, and Home Minister (Internal Security) Rajnath Singh.

There are over 87 million eligible voters who can cast their votes during the day.

India's elections are to take place in seven different phases. The sixth phase is due on Sunday, and the seventh and last phase on May 19. Election results are to be announced on May 23.
