Taiwan's future lies in national reunification: spokesperson

BEIJING -- Taiwan's future lies in national reunification and the wellbeing of Taiwan compatriots lies in national rejuvenation, a Chinese mainland spokesperson told a press conference Wednesday.

Ma Xiaoguang, a spokesperson with the State Council Taiwan Affairs Office, made the remarks in response to Foxconn founder and chairman Terry Gou's comments on the 1992 Consensus.

Noting that the mainland and Taiwan both belong to one China, Ma said the 1992 Consensus has clearly defined the nature of cross-Straits relations, which are not state-to-state relations.

It is in the common interests of people of both sides to uphold the 1992 Consensus, to oppose "Taiwan independence," and to work for the peaceful development of cross-Straits relations and advance the process toward the peaceful reunification of China, he said.

The two sides should work together to resolve differences based on the one-China principle and with an attitude responsible for the Chinese nation and future generations, he added.
