A man who stabbed dead two 10-year-old students in Shanghai last year was sentenced to death by the Shanghai No 1 Intermediate People's Court on Thursday.

Although Huang Yichuan was diagnosed with slight schizophrenia and bears limited criminal responsibility in this case, the court said that it was not able to exempt him from punishment. The mental disorder did not influence his ability to know what he was doing and control his behavior when he committed the crime, which he had planned to carry out for a long time, it said.

On the morning of June 28, Huang, a native of Shaoyang city, Hunan province, killed two boys near the gate of the Shanghai World Foreign Language Primary School on Pubei Road in Xuhui district. He also injured another boy and a woman.

The court, which heard the case on Dec 6, said that Huang, who was then 29, committed the crime as he was frustrated by problems at work and wanted to vent personal spite on vulnerable children.

"Huang prepared to carry out serious violence against innocent children near the school. His motive for killing was extremely malicious and his means of committing the crime was extremely cruel. The consequences of the crime were extremely serious, and the social impact was extremely abominable," the court said in a document.

Huang, a college graduate, traveled to Shanghai on June 6 and bought a stainless steel kitchen knife at a supermarket on Jun 12.

At around 7 am on June 28, Huang traveled by bus from the hostel where he was staying to the school vicinity. He was carrying the kitchen knife in a plastic bag.

After looking for several opportunities to commit the murders, at around 11:30 am he stalked and hacked three young male students walking out of the school. He also attacked a mother walking in front of them around 130 meters from the school gate, the court said.

Two boys, surnamed Tan and Fei died, and Tan's mother Zhang was injured. Another boy surnamed Jin was injured. All the boys were fourth-graders.

Huang was quickly subdued by school security guards and passers-by, the court said.

It added that Huang had visited several kindergartens and primary schools in Shanghai and Guangzhou, Guangdong province, between March and October 2017 before deciding where to carry out the attack.
