In unusual but true stories this week, we have a programmer recreating classic artwork with thread and a mathematic algorithm, a dramatic design concept for a 'cliff hotel' proposed for Norway, Tokyo 2020 Olympic medals made from recycled cell phones and electronics, the world's first irrigated green wall from a 3D printer, and a street artist with stunning optical designs painted on homes in Germany.

All the odd and interesting anecdotes from around the world are here in our review.

Amazing algorithm threads way for classic art remakes

An ingenious programmer has invented an algorithm that helps her recreate classic artwork using only sewing thread and circular looms.

Programmer Ani Abakumova, 32, from Moscow, Russia, uses her own mathematic algorithm to find out how to arrange straight lines of thread on a loom so they will mimic classic portraits.

In her studio, Ani Abakumova selects thread to use for her creations, which feature beautiful threaded portraits. [Photo/IC]

She has invented a special computer program able to convert a portrait into a knitting pattern, which she then reproduces by hand using colored thread and circular looms.

With the only help of mathematics, Ani was able to reproduce stunning thread-made versions of classic portraits such as the Mona Lisa and the Girl with a Pearl Earring.
