A teacher charged with molesting children was sentenced to five years and banned from working near juveniles for five years after serving his prison term by a court in Wuxi's Xinwu district, East China's Jiangsu province, China Youth Daily reported.

This is the first time such a ban has been imposed in Wuxi.

The suspect, surnamed Guan, used to taught children calligraphy and painting at an afterschool institution.

Taking advantage of his position, he sexually molested a number of underage girls in November 2018, severely affecting their physical and mental health and infringing their basic human rights.

Xinwu district authorities issued a regulation in April, requiring kids-related institutions to check the records of new staff members at the public security department and ban those listed as sexual offenders from entering the workplace.

While investigating the case, procurators discovered that Guan molested the children in public, and suggested five years in prison and a five-year work ban to the court. The court agreed with the suggestion.

“Children need to be taken care of by the whole society,” said the head of the People’s Procuratorate of Xinwu district. “We should show zero tolerance to crimes of sexual assault against children.”

Prevention and punishment is linked with the healthy growth of minors as well as the harmony and tranquility of society as a whole, he added.
