A fireball meteor was seen in Northeast China's provinces including Jilin, Liaoning and Heilongjiang in Friday's wee hours, with no casualties or property loss yet reported.

At around 16 minutes past midnight, the meteor appeared in the sky and set off a huge blaze, illuminating the night for a few seconds.

Thousands of people watched the meteor fall and videos capturing the moment have gone viral online.

One post said: "Unexpectedly, I saw a shooting star when I just came out of the airport at midnight. It was so bright and beautiful. But I made my wish after being dumb for a while. Does it still work?"

The meteor is forecast to fall near Songyuan city, Jilin province but no actual pieces have been found yet.
