Porn, gambling, gangs, drug abuse in crosshairs

China Daily | Updated: 2019-11-29 09:04

A senior official of the Communist Party of China on Wednesday required efforts to establish long-term mechanisms to combat and punish pornography, gambling, drug abuse and gang violence.

Guo Shengkun, a member of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee and head of the Commission for Political and Legal Affairs of the CPC Central Committee, made the remarks at a symposium.

The symposium, held by the Commission for Political and Legal Affairs as per the CPC Central Committee plans on the Party's education campaign themed "staying true to our founding mission", discussed fighting and punishing the practices of turning a blind eye to criminal activities and harboring or even acting as "protective umbrellas" of those who participate in such crimes.

Guo urged officials to carry out self-reform and remain dedicated to serving the people in their work. He also called on them to focus on addressing issues the people are strongly concerned about and to achieve actual outcomes in breaking up "umbrellas" and "networks".

He underscored targeting key regions, industries and areas prone to such illegal activities and keeping a close eye on major gang criminal cases, "protective umbrellas" and "connections", and the economic foundation of criminal gangs.
