The Supreme People's Procuratorate welcomed a group of visitors consisting of university students, lawyers, deputies from the National People's Congress and legal experts on Tuesday during the procuratorate's 33rd open day event.

Since the open day was held the day before China's sixth Constitution Day, the event was themed around carrying forward the spirit of the Constitution and modernizing China's governance system and capacity.

Zhang Jun, procurator-general of the SPP, lead the retaking of Constitutional oaths at the welcome ceremony in the morning, and in a later speech said to carry forward the spirit of the Constitution, the first thing is to fully implement it, and the judicial and procuratorial organs are the main bodies to shoulder such responsibility.

Luo Qingdong, a prosecutor for the SPP, told visitors since 2019, procurator organs nationwide approved the arrest of 53,015 people in 18,421 cases related to gang crime, and prosecuted 77,152 people in 11,737 other criminal cases.

"Complaint, appeal and accusation are the basic rights of the citizen given by the Constitution, and to fully implement these rights the SPP has established a department dedicated to handling public grievances," said Xu Xiangchun, head of the SPP department specializing in public complaint handling.

According to statistics provided by the SPP, it answered a total of 160,000 petition letters from January to October, and processed almost eight thousand cases related to criminal appeals in the last three months.

"Quick response to public letters is a requirement of adherence to people-centered development, and a vital measure to defuse social tensions and foster a good image of procuratorial organs," Xu said.
