BEIJING - BMW decided to recall 81 vehicles in China from Friday over gearbox harness miswiring, according to China's market regulator.

The recall, filed by BMW China Automotive Trading Ltd involves imported models of BMW M5 and M8 manufactured between Jan 29 and Oct 15, 2019, the State Administration for Market Regulation said in a statement.

The defective miswiring in these cars' gearboxes may cause short circuit of the harnesses and even the loss of the transmission power, posing safety risks, according to the statement.

The company will repair the gearbox harnesses of the recalled cars free of charge. Damaged harnesses will be replaced.
