Incumbent Alpha Conde, 82, has won Guinea's presidential election, securing a third term according to the country's Independent National Election Commission.

Announcing the results on Saturday, the commission said Conde garnered 59.5 percent of the vote in the Oct 18 election.

Conde became Guinea's first democratically elected president in 2010 after decades of military rule, and was re-elected in 2015 with 57 percent of the vote.

Cellou Diallo, 68, Conde's main opponent who won 33.5 percent of the vote, rejected the results, saying he had evidence of fraud and planned to file a complaint with the constitutional court.

The announcement of the results follows days of post-election violence that erupted on Oct 20, following the announcement of provisional results that indicated Conde was leading.

Several people, including a police officer, have been killed in Guinea's capital of Conakry following violence that has been condemned by the international community, including the United Nations, United Kingdom and African Union.

With a population of 13.4 million, Guinea boasts plentiful natural resources. The country possesses large bauxite reserves and significant amounts of gold, iron and diamond.

It also has high hydroelectric potential. According to the African Development Bank Group, the country's hydroelectric potential, which is currently less than 6 percent tapped, is estimated at 6,000 megawatts, with guaranteed energy of 19,300 gigawatt hours a year.

However, the country's economy largely depends on subsistence agriculture and its people are among the poorest in West Africa.

According to the World Food Programme, 54 percent of the country's population lives in poverty and 24.4 percent of children under 5 years have stunted growth.
