GABORONE -- Botswana professional boxers Onkarabile 'Scara' Mothibedi and Tshepang 'Gearbox' Babui are expected to make history this Friday when they meet in the ring.

The two bantamweights will compete for the vacant World Boxing Federation (WBF) title in the capital city Gaborone, Botswana. The winner is expected to become Botswana's first legitimate world champion.

Local boxing analysts have found it difficult to predict the fight as the two boxers are evenly matched. Babui commands a record of five wins, two losses and two draws while Mothibedi has a record of three wins and two losses.

Speaking during a media brief, Tumiso Rakgare, Minister of Youth Empowerment, Sport and Cultural Development, said more boxing events should be held to produce more local boxers who are able to contend at all levels.

"Botswana is like a sleeping giant in boxing, it has a huge potential but it is not taken seriously by Europeans and I want to change that, I want to see boxing developing from grassroots level and to create champions here," said WBF president Howard Goldberg.
