NYC COVID-19 infection rate hits 3.33 pct: mayor

NEW YORK - New York City's COVID-19 infection rate on a seven-day average reached 3.33 percent, compared with 3.19 percent one day earlier, Mayor Bill de Blasio tweeted on Friday.

"We CANNOT let up the fight this weekend, New York City. Wear a mask, get tested, and help us push back this second wave," added the mayor.

The rate topped 3 percent a week ago and has remained above the level ever since. Three percent is deemed by the municipal government as a threshold for a second wave of the pandemic.

Over 150 million pieces of personal protective equipment have been amassed by the city government in preparation for the second wave, said an official press release issued on Wednesday.

As of Thursday afternoon, coronavirus deaths have added up to 24,241 and confirmed cases to 302,522 in New York City, according to The City, a project that tracks the spread of confirmed COVID-19 infections and fatalities in New York City, based on information provided by the New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene, the governor's office, The COVID Tracking Project and the Center for Systems Science and Engineering at Johns Hopkins University.
