An avid art collector for several decades, Stone donated several hundreds of pieces of his collection to the Arthur M. Sackler Museum of Art and Archaeology at PKU's School of Archaeology and Museology.

Stone assembled a collection of art using only his teacher's salary. He taught at Harvard, New York University and the City University of New York.

His donations throughout the years included prints, drawings and watercolors by Western master artists, such as Raphael, Eugene Delacroix and Pablo Picasso, as well as Chinese antiquities of the Han (BC 206-AD 220) and Tang (618-907) dynasties.
