A young man surnamed Wang from Huanggang, Hubei province, weighed more than 175 kilograms three years ago. His back hurt if he reclined for more than 30 minutes at a time. His obesity made him want to hide. He became solitary and lost confidence. Diet and medicines failed to help him lose weight, so he turned to surgery.

Then he met Shu, and his life changed.

To protect their privacy, they asked that their full names not be published.

In early March 2019, Wang, 24,and Shu, 28, met for the first time at Wuhan University's Zhongnan Hospital. They had something in common: She was also about to get a gastrectomy to bring down her weight.
