Ontime, a mobile transportation platform headquartered in Guangzhou, the capital of Guangdong province, has teamed up with autonomous driving technology firm WeRide, to upgrade its robotaxi vehicles.

The cooperation with WeRide will help accelerate the robotaxi's commercial operation, according to the company.

Under the agreement, both sides will work closely in robotaxi's front loading model design and mass production in the near future.

China's first robotaxi was tested in Guangzhou after WeRide started its cooperation with GAC Group, the parent company of Ontime, early in 2018.

Based on GAC's strength in manufacturing, as well as WeRide's autonomous driving technology and Ontime's efficient transportation service, robotaxi services are expected to be available for users in 2022, according to Ontime sources.
