30 feared dead in Liberia church stampede

Some 30 people are reported dead following stampede at a church crusade in New Kru Town, the suburb of Liberia's capital Monrovia, on Wednesday night.

District representative Dixon Seboe confirmed the information in a post on his Facebook account.

Doctors confirmed the deaths, include 11 children, Seboe said, adding those injured are in critical condition.

He expressed sadness about the situation, and called on Liberians to pray for his district.

The crusade was being organized by popular Liberian clergyman Apostle Abraham Kromah.

An eyewitness account said the stampede occurred as a result of disadvantaged youths known "zogos" who reportedly began terrorizing those leaving the crusade venue, so they began to run for their lives, causing the deadliest church stampede in the country's history.
