The meteorological service authority in Shenzhen, Guangdong province, issued a red warning for torrential rains on Thursday, the highest of the four-tiered warning system, calling on residents to avoid outdoor activities.

Affected by the downpour, passenger shipping service between Shenzhen and Zhongshan was canceled between Wednesday and Friday.

All kindergartens and primary and secondary schools in the city were also suspended from Thursday to Friday, when torrential rains were forecast to batter the area.

Off-campus training institutions and child care facilities also stopped operations, according to the city's flood control headquarters.

Torrential rains were forecast to hit the city on Thursday and Friday, especially in Bao'an, Nanshan, Futian and Yantian districts, Dapeng New Area and the Shenzhen-Shanwei Special Cooperation Zone.

When the red warning takes effect, employers should arrange for staff to postpone and leave work early or stop work entirely, according to the local flood control headquarters.

Affected by the spate of heavy rains, all the city's forest and country parks, including the Wutong Mountain scenic spot and the Futian Mangrove Ecological Park, were closed to the public starting Thursday until further notice.

"The public area in my residential community was full of water, after rain poured down in the early morning, but without strong winds," said Zeng Xuanxin, a 37-year-old mother in Shenzhen.

The local flood control headquarters has directed the 45,000 staff members responsible for managing flood risks across the city to remain vigilant and monitor the situation closely.

Flood control and disaster relief workers across Guangdong province have worked diligently to eliminate safety hazards as the southern province braced for possibly the heaviest torrential rains this year, which began on Wednesday.

As of Thursday afternoon, five red warnings for torrential rains are in effect in Taishan, a county-level city in Jiangmen, as well as the cities of Heyuan, Zhuhai, Zhongshan and Shenzhen in the province.

Yellow and orange warnings had already been issued covering the entire area of the province, according to sources with the Guangdong Meteorological Service Center.
