The United States should stop trying to approach China from a position of strength and cease attempting to contain China's development, State Councilor and Foreign Minister Wang Yi told Nicholas Burns, the US ambassador to China.

Wang, who is also a member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China Central Committee, made the remarks when Burns visited him on Friday.

Wang also said the world hopes for the steady development of China-US ties, which are at a crucial stage.

When developing ties with the US, China follows the fundamental principle put forward by President Xi Jinping, which is that the two countries should respect each other, coexist in peace, and pursue win-win cooperation, Wang added.

As two major countries, China and the US are not able to change each other, Wang pointed out, while adding that he hopes Burns will serve as a bridge and link between the two nations.

In welcoming Burns, Wang introduced him to the main outcomes and the significance of the recently concluded 20th CPC National Congress.

Burns said he pays great attention to the congress, and has read carefully the report to the congress. US-China ties are vital to both countries, as well as to the world, Burns said, adding that the US hopes to strengthen communication with China to manage differences and promote cooperation.
