Americans name the government as the nation's most important problem and inflation as the second, Gallup's latest poll reported.

When asked to name the most important problem currently facing the US, 21 percent named the government while 15 percent said inflation, according to a field period poll conducted from Jan 2 to 22 with those dates including the four-day, 15-vote process.

Ten percent chose the economy as the most important problem, adding to the current consensus that Americans lack confidence in their current and future economic health, the author said.

Americans' ratings of national economic conditions are tracked by Gallup as four options: excellent, good, fair or poor. Currently, 45 percent chose poor while 38 percent chose fair, the author added.

The top problems mentioned in the poll in addition to those mentioned above include immigration, unifying the country, racism, poverty, crime and family decline.
