Chinese characters a recurring motif of sculptors
The formation of Chinese characters makes them each a stand-alone subject of research and creation for artists to explore and reinterpret the philosophy behind.
For years, sculptor Zhu Lin has been devoted to rearranging the structure of characters, and giving his audience a fresh perspective to feel the beauty of them. His such unique "character sculptures" are now on show at his solo exhibition, Time, Space, Plastics, at the gallery of Art News of China through to mid-August in Beijing.
On show are his Twelve Zodiacs series in which he infuses the formations of characters and the 12 Chinese zodiac animals, and the 24 Solar Terms series in which he reconstructs the structure of characters in an abstract way, showing a structural beauty other than the meanings being embodied.
