Global lens: Greece reels from raging wildfires

More than 40,000 hectares of forested zones and farmland were destroyed in wildfires between Aug 19 and Monday, estimates from the National Observatory of Athens based on satellite data showed.

A Supreme Court prosecutor has ordered an investigation into the cause of the wildfires near the city of Alexandroupolis in the north that have been burning for the fifth day now, according to the fire brigade.

On Tuesday and Wednesday, five individuals were arrested in the country on suspicion of causing fires either by neglect or intentionally, according to the fire brigade.
