Fotografiska, a contemporary museum of photography, art, and culture, launched its Shanghai center, the first in Asia, along the Suzhou Creek on Friday.

Fotografiska Shanghai is located in one of the three historical warehouses built in the early 20th century on Guangfu Road and is near to the Sihang Warehouse.

The four-story historical landmark spans nearly 4,600 square meters and comprises spaces for exhibitions, indoor and outdoor event venues, a concept store, and a restaurant and lounge bar overlooking the river.

"We started in New York, then we went to Berlin, and it was always obvious for us that we wanted to be in Shanghai in order to be in China. We think that China has a huge contribution to the vocabulary of imagery and visual language. And we see it throughout photography and video, and we want to be where a lot of this comes from," said Yoram Roth, chairman of Fotografiska group.

Fotografiska Shanghai's opening shows are featuring the works of four outstanding artists from the East and the West: Feng Li, Edward Burtynsky, Fan Xi, and Samson Young.

Founded in 2010, Fotografiska also has outposts in Stockholm in Sweden, Tallinn in Estonia, New York in the United States, and Berlin in Germany.
