During a recent seminar held in Shenzhen city, Southern China's Guangdong province, experts actively shared their views on the technological progress and market potential of the electric vertical take-off and landing (eVTOL) aircraft industry.

Guo Xinlu, a product manager with BAK Power Battery Co Ltd, delivered a speech about the batteries for eVTOL and discussed the application prospects of the company's products in the sector.

Guo said the cells of eVTOL batteries must be aligned with strict standards, such as inherent safety and long cycle life. Currently, the industry is still exploring and has not yet developed a product that could perfectly meet all the needs of eVTOL.

Guo also said the cylindrical continuous tab batteries are expected to become a major power source for low-flying aircraft, due to its high energy density, high power, high degree of safety, fast charging speed and long cycle life.

According to Guo, BAK Power's 2170-48B battery cell is one of such products. With its energy density surpassing 270Wh/kg, an 8C max continuous discharge rate, and a cycle life of over 1000 times, the battery cell has successfully passed multiple tests such as 130 C hot box and heavy object impact.

Meanwhile, its upgraded product 2170-55B has even higher energy density and better power performance, which could be a perfect choice for pure eVTOL aircraft.

When it comes to the hybrid eVTOL aircraft, Guo said BAK Power has specially designed a product named 2170-25B. The battery can maintain high power output and only needs seven minutes to be charged from 10 to 80 percent.

BAK Power will continue to develop batteries for low-flying aircraft, with further efforts in optimizing the battery structure and promoting innovations that target battery chemistry.

Its big cylindrical continuous tab battery, for example, is expected to possess an energy density of 400Wh/kg by 2030, thus injecting fresh impetus into the industry.

The company also expects its products to meet the power demand in more different application scenarios, including passenger transport, cargo transport and police security, Guo added.
