Zhang Xiaodong, a member of the 14th National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference, is encouraging more women to unlock their potential through sports.

At the 1992 Olympic Games in Barcelona, Spain, the then 28-year-old won the first Olympic medal for the Chinese yachting team — a silver medal in the women's Lechner A-390 class, a breakthrough for both China and Asia.

Now president of the Chinese Yachting Association, she is dedicated to popularizing water sports, nurturing young talent, organizing competitions and expanding the community of enthusiasts.

Based on her observations, an increasing number of women are joining the sailing community, especially the well-educated and confident, who show a growing interest in these water sports and actively participate.

"Challenges for women in sailing do exist, particularly in terms of physical strength. However, their determination and resilience are undeniable strengths. Women's participation in sports is a demonstration of female power," she said.

She mentioned that she personally benefited from windsurfing, an experience that instilled in her a quality of perseverance. This tenacity translates into her work ethic, where she embodies a never-give-up spirit.

Zhang said that the association will continue to provide chances for more women to have a go at water sports.
