Waste cooking oil can be green recipeBy Li Huayu (China Daily)
Updated: 2008-01-14 17:29 Biodiesel also reduces the overall amount of carbon dioxide (CO2) released into the atmosphere because not only does it produce less CO2 than conventional diesel, the crops eventually used to produce biodiesel absorb large amounts of CO2 as they grow, according to the US DOE. Wong says the fuel produced by his company all comes from waste oils, eliminating its need to grow crops, so the cost is much lower, while diesel-powered vehicles can use General Biodiesel's products with no modifications. Vehicles powered by his biodiesel do not require special retrofitting, so they are 70 to 90 percent cheaper than specially designed new energy cars, explains Wong. China is now the world's second-largest vehicle market following only the US. Experts say that the Chinese vehicle market will grow more than 20 percent in 2008 to production and sales of more than 8.6 million vehicles. The country does not yet have a uniform quality standard for biodiesel. Most produced domestically is used to power agricultural machinery and electricity generators, and cannot ensure zero damage when used directly as fuel for vehicles and ships.
