A recent survey indicates that dating expenses represent some 20 per cent of male university students' total monthly living expenditures in Guangzhou.

Dating expenses usually include buying roses, skirts, dolls and eating out. The amount reaches an average of more than 400 yuan (US$50) a month.

And the trend is to spend. The survey, recently conducted by the Guangzhou Consumers' Council, interviewed more than 1,000 male students in the city's major universities and colleges.

The survey also indicated that male students' monthly average living expenditures reach more than 2,000 yuan (US$250) a month, and most of the students have to seek further financial support from their parents.
