Haikou, capital of Hainan Province, plans to build or reconstruct a total of 150 public toilets in two years.

The toilets, which will include advanced equipment, will be free to local residents and tourists. Most will be situated in scenic spots and major streets in the southern Chinese metropolis. Construction funds for the toilets will surpass 70 million yuan (US$8.75 million).

The municipal government expects the new toilets will help improve the city's image.
