The Guinness Shanghai Headquarters on Thursday approved a new world record for a grand banquet in Rongfu County in Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region on October 30.

A total of 1,199 people aged more than 70 participated in the banquet. They sat around 200 old-fashioned wooden tables, forming a big Chinese character shou, meaning longevity in Chinese.

The character stretched 68 metres long and 37 metres wide.

It was the largest banquet organized for senior residents in the world.

The special banquet was aimed at further raising awareness of the county's growing number of senior citizens.
