A survey showed 17.5 percent of Chinese adults are suffering from mental disorders, with 6.1 percent suffering from mood disorders, 5.6 percent suffering from anxiety disorders and 5.9 percent suffering from substance abuse disorders, chinanews.com.cn reported Wednesday.

The survey, jointly conducted by several Chinese hospitals around the country from 2001 to 2005, was the third of its kind and covered 12 percent of Chinese adults who are older than 18 years old.

Women are more likely to suffer from mood disorders and anxiety disorders than men, and chances of men suffering from alcohol abuse disorders are 38 times higher than women, according to the survey.

Those older than 40 are more likely to suffer from mental disorders than adults who are younger than 40, the survey showed.
