More care and support will be provided for the disabled children, authorities in Shanghai announced.

Since the beginning of the school semester in September, local health and education departments have been working together to establish comprehensive health assessments and rehabilitation plans for disabled school-age children.

According to health authorities, more than 200 disabled children began primary school this year.

So far, medical experts from the city's children hospitals and special education experts have already completed the initial health assessments. The next step under the plan is to establish a personal health file for these students and make individually tailored rehabilitation programs for them.

The comprehensive assessment aims to identify children's physical health condition, intellectual development, psychological behavior as well as the ability to adapt to society. With this basic health information, the authorities intend to design individualized education, rehabilitation and health care programs to help them better adapt to school life, and official from Shanghai Municipal Health Bureau said.
