8 killed in road accident in Xinjiang

URUMQI - Eight people were killed in a road accident on Sunday morning in Northwest China's Xinjiang Uygur autonomous region, local traffic police said.

The accident occurred at about 10:35 am on a highway in Huangdi township, Shache county in Kashi prefecture, when a heavy truck collided with an SUV and another truck.

The driver of the SUV and three passengers in the vehicle died on the spot, another three passengers in the SUV and the driver of the truck were seriously injured and then died in hospital.

The driver of the heavy truck has been detained by police.

The cause of the accident is being investigated.
