People's Daily Online launched its German-language website, german.people.cn, on Wednesday, along with a mobile app and an iPad app, as part of its effort to enhance international communications.

"The German-language website, as the eighth foreign language version of our company, will set up a new communication platform between Internet users from China and German-speaking countries, and will open a new page in cultural exchanges between them," said Liao Hong, president of People's Daily Online, at the launching ceremony.

"The website will enhance mutually-beneficial and win-win cooperation between China and Germany, as well as promote the China-Germany strategic partnership," said Mei Zhaorong, former ambassador of China to Germany.

"The website will provide a channel for Swiss who are interested in Chinese culture to better understand China, and build a bridge of friendship between Chinese and Swiss," said Jenny Piaget, director of the culture and media department at the Swiss embassy in China.

"The website will play a big role in making the world a global village," said Liu Liqun, a professor from Beijing Foreign Studies University.

German.people.cn aims to introduce information about China's politics, economy, society, education, science, culture and tourism to German-speaking Internet users. It will strive to create a new platform between Internet users in China and in German-speaking countries such as Germany, Austria and Switzerland.

People's Daily Online now provides services to world readers in eight foreign languages - English, Japanese, French, Spanish, Russian, Arabic, Korean, and German.
