GUANGZHOU - Six people were killed putting out a forest fire in south China's Guangdong Province, said government sources Friday.

The fire broke out at midday Friday in a mountain forest near two villages in Meixian District, Meizhou City.

More than 210 forestry personnel and villagers rushed to the scene to contain the fire, which was put under control at 2:30 p.m. One hour later, mountain wind in the area suddenly changed direction and the fire spread rapidly again, trapping eight fire fighters.

Two survivors have been taken to hospital and the fire is once more under control.

The cause of the fire is being investigated.
