The port city of Dalian's customs has reported a reduction in both smuggling cases and the total value of smuggled goods confiscated last year.

Dalian customs dealt with 359 cases of smuggling in 2001, 6.75 percent fewer than in the previous year, with confiscated goods worth 104.4 million yuan (US$12.6 million), down 77.79 percent.

There was a significant drop in cigarette, magnesite and car smuggling but a rise in smuggled cultural relics, a customs official said.

Freight transport remained the most frequent channel used by smugglers, contributing to 70 percent of the total number of smuggling cases and the total value of smuggled goods.
