Flood-hit national highway ready to open again
( 2002-06-20 08:41 ) (8 )

Rush repairs on the No. 108 national highway were almost finished Wednesday and it is expected to open to traffic Thursday morning.

Flooding on June 8 damaged an 80-kilometer section on the road in northwest China's Shaanxi Province. As the road is the only route to Fuping County, one of the most seriously affected areas in Shaanxi, relief goods to Fuping had to be carried on the backs or shoulders of emergency workers.

A section between Fuping and Xi'an, the provincial capital, has already re-opened. Large amounts of relief materials have flowed to flood-hit areas along the road. When the final section opens tomorrow, the entire national trunk will resume normal operations.

Rainstorms struck Fuping County in southern Shaanxi on the night of June 8, cutting power supply and telecommunications and traffic to the outside world.
