Earthquake jolts northeastern Taiwan An earthquake measuring 4.1 on the Richter scale rocked northeastern Taiwan Thursday, seismologists said. There were no reports of casualties or damage. The tremor struck at 12:43 pm (0443 GMT) from an epicenter 13.1 kilometers (8.1 miles) northeast of Taiwan's northeastern town Nanao. It originated 11.5 kilometers below the earth's crust. A quake measuring 6.8 on the Richter scale on March 31 killed five people and its aftershock on May 15, with a magnitude of 6.2, left a three-month-old boy dead. A quake measuring 7.6 devastated central Taiwan on September 21, 1999, leaving 2,400 people dead and some 100,000 homeless.
