Water level at Three Gorges Reservoir reaches 117 meters
( 2003-06-05 10:43) (8)

By 10:00 p.m. Wednesday, the water level at the Three Gorges reservoir had reached 117.15 meters.

The reservoir started storing water at 00:00 hours on Sunday as the sluice gate began to close.

The water level will rise by four to five meters daily and is expected to reach 135 meters by June 15. Navigation on the Yangtze River is expected to resume on June 16 following a lapse of 67 days.

After ten years of construction, the Three Gorges project will begin to pay dividends this year, playing an important part in flood control, power generation, navigation, water diversion and environmental protection.

The construction of the Three Gorges project is expected to be completed in 2009.
