Police destroy one ton of "crystal meth" drugs
( 2003-06-27 15:15) (China Daily)

Police in Zhejiang Province, east China, have destroyed one ton of "ice", or crystal methamphetamine, in a show of determination against drug trafficking.

The drug, destroyed in public at Jiaojiang District in Taizhou City, was confiscated by border police in anti-drug operations over the past several years.

With a coastline of 2,800 km and about 3,000 islands, the province has been one of the regions in China faced with the arduous tasks of cracking down on drug trafficking by both land and sea.

Border police in the province have uncovered 28 cases of drug trafficking and production, involving 723 grams of heroin, 1,249 kg of crystal methamphetamine, 1.2 kg of opium, and 182 suspected drug traffickers.

A total of 166 were detained, and 59 of them have been prosecuted for drug-related offenses.
