Premier Wen meets principal HKSAR gov't officials ( 2003-07-01 14:49) (Xinhua)
Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao met with principal officials of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) government here Tuesday morning. During the meeting, Wen reiterated that the new Central Government will unswervingly implement the policy of "one country, two systems" and fully support the HKSAR government in the administration according to law in maintaining Hong Kong's long- term prosperity and stability. He said practices in the past six years has fully testified to the fact that the basic policies of "one country, two systems," " Hong Kong people administering Hong Kong" and a high degree of autonomy are completely correct, and Hong Kong's prosperity and stability are witnessed by the entire world. He said although Hong Kong is facing temporary economic difficulties at present, it will ride through the difficulties if people from all circles unite, respond with resolve and grasp the opportunities, adding that "Hong Kong's future development will be shaped by the people of Hong Kong." Wen stressed that what are most needed now are "understanding, trust and support" for the Hong Kong society and "understanding, trust and unity" for the HKSAR government. The premier also noted that the newly-signed Mainland/Hong Kong Closer Economic Partnership Arrangement (CEPA) will be carried out under the "one country, two systems" principle. State Councilor Tang Jiaxuan and vice chairman of the 10th National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC) and director of the Hong Kong and Macao Affairs Office of the State Council Liao Hui attended the meeting. Officials of the HKSAR government attending the meeting included Chief Executive Tung Chee Hwa, Chief Justice Andrew Kwok- nang Li, Administrative Secretary Donald Tsang, Financial Secretary Antony Leung, Secretary for Justice Elsie Leung, Legislative Council President Rita Fan, member of the Executive Council Leung Chun-ying.
