China imports more sedan cars
( 2003-07-06 09:56) (Xinhua)

A total of 5,837 cars, worth a combined value of US$202 million, were imported via Shanghai Port from January to May, according to figures from Shanghai Customshouse.

Car imports are up by 93.5 percent from the same period last year.

Out of total car imports, 98.1 percent are intermediate and luxury cars with engine size exceeding 1,500 ml, almost treble the figure for the same period last year.

And 2,079 cars were imported from Japan and another 2,476 were from Germany, up 36.8 percent and 60 percent respectively. Japanese and German-made cars together made up 78 percent of the city's total car imports in the past five months.

Imports of foreign cars only stood at 906 in May due to the negative impact of severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS), the lowest level in the past five months.
