Regina Ip file ( 2003-07-17 08:20) (China Daily HK Edition) Regina Ip joined the
administrative service of the government in 1975 and has served in various
departments. She was appointed director-general of industry on September 3,
1995, and director of immigration on August 19, 1996.
Ip was appointed in February 1997 by the Central People's Government as the
first director of immigration of the Hong Kong SAR. In July 1998, she was
appointed as secretary for security. In June 2002, she was re-appointed as the
secretary for security for a second term. She became a member of the Executive
Council (the highest policy-making body in Hong Kong) on July 1, 2002.
Ip was the first woman appointed to head a disciplined service (Immigration
Department) and the first woman appointed as secretary for security. More than
63,000 civil servants (one-third of the civil service) plus over 10,000
volunteers serve under her.
Prior to joining the civil service, she aspired to be a scholar. For her
Master of Letters degree from Glasgow University her field of study was
sixteenth century poetry (the poetry of Sir Philip Sidney).
She is a widow with one daughter.
