A man died from serious injuries suffered when he tried to save two young women from a group of assailants, reports Southern Metropolis News.

Li and Liu, two young women residing in Gongming Town, Shenzhen, saw a "fortune wheel" stall set up in the neighbourhood on Friday night and decided to have a go out of curiosity.

But the game was not played as Li and Liu expected. When the wheel stopped, they were ordered to pay 100 yuan (US$12) for two bottles of shampoo they had "won" - as some 10 men surrounded them.

They were forced to continue playing, even after they paid the money. Li and Liu tried to escape but were intercepted and beaten.

Xu Xingtao, who was eating at a nearby restaurant with his wife and a friend, charged out to save the two young women but was bludgeoned with clubs.

He collapsed covered in blood and later died in hospital.
