Passengers do not mind end of discount
( 2003-08-25 11:32) (HK Edition)

Most Guangzhou residents say they would not be adversely affected by the collective decision of several public transport companies to discontinue the "Yangchengtong" discount from September.

Passengers using the Yangchengtong card, a public transport smart card similar to the Octopus Card in Hong Kong, enjoy a 5 per cent discount on metro, bus and ferry fares, reports the Guangzhou-based New Express News.

The discount was intended to popularize the use of the Yangchengtong system, said public transport officials, and that goal has been achieved.

In a random poll conducted by the newspaper, only a few passengers said they minded the discount ending.

"I understand the move. The discount is insignificant for individuals, but it will make a big difference to the public transport companies," said Li.

Many expressed hopes that the additional revenue would be used to expand usage of Yangchengtong cards.

In addition to paying for transport, the card can currently be used on parking meters, public phones and at some fast food chains.
