Secret passage extends to HK ( 2003-08-26 16:30) (China Daily) A secret subterranean
passageway that police believe was dug by smugglers has been found at a
residential complex near Zhongying Street (Chung Ying Street), reports Shenzhen
Commercial Daily.
Hong Kong police have been alerted, and the 25-metre-long underground passage
is now being refilled.
The Shenzhen-side opening of the tunnel was found in a vacant ground-floor
flat at Haitao Garden in the Shatoujiao area.
The flat, located some 20 metres from the Hong Kong-Shenzhen border, is owned
by a woman surnamed Liu.
Liu moved away in 1997, and the flat is now for rent. It has been vacant
since October 2000, when the last tenant left, Liu said.
The earth dug out of the passage was piled up inside the flat. Liu also
discovered a newspaper dated November 4, 2002, which she thinks must have been
left behind by the intruders.
